It is one of the first radios to incorporate a SOLAR AM/FM Radio with Dynamo Hand Crank back-up along with NOAA WEATHER BAND and two SHORTWAVE radio bands all in one compact radio! The weather alert feature enables you to receive the NOAA alert signals for local weather disasters. The 7-weather channels are pre-programmed and numbered from 1-7 so you can easily tune into your local NOAA station by turning the switch, no more guess work or signal hunting involved.
Besides being a great emergency survival radio, it also provides another emergency essential LIGHT! This radio provides bright reading light with its Super Bright FIVE LED area light bar built into the backside of the adjustable tilt solar panel. This is the best we have seen on any portable radio. It makes reading very easy when you're left in the dark!
In addition the radio has a super bright LED on the side that can be used as a flashlight or become a red flashing emergency signal. LEDs provide much longer run times compared to conventional flashlight bulbs and virtually never burn out (10,000 hours+). You'll never have any bulbs to replace!

One thing that we really liked when testing this radio is the
FIVE (5) BACK-UP POWER SOURCES you can use to run this radio. You can use
1) SOLAR POWER: It has one of the best built-in adjustable solar panels we have ever seen on a radio. The solar panel is uniquely designed to be adjustable 180-degrees for maximum solar sun charging. Panel provides plenty of power to play the radio AND recharge the INCLUDED over-sized rechargeable NI-MH battery pack (replaceable). Panel is also protected by a clear plastic safety cover.
Approximately 4 - 6 hours of direct sunlight will provide enough power to run your radio for hours after the sun goes down.
2) SELF-POWERED DYNAMO HAND CRANK: The 'ULTRA' features a beefy hand crank dynamo generator to recharge the INCLUDED NI-MH rechargeable battery pack. Steady cranking for about 2 minutes provides up to 45 minutes of playing time.
3) 'AA'-BATTERIES: Radio has a separate compartment for adding 3 AA sized batteries (not included) for hours and hours of maximum radio and/or LED lighting. It is unlikely that a set of batteries will go dead before an emergency has resolved itself, but I its always nice to have another one or two back-up power sources like the crank or solar paneljust in case.
4) Optional AC POWER: You can power the radio by using an (optional) 6.0 volt AC power adapter or use it to full recharge the rechargeable battery pack.
5) Via Optional USB Computer Cable: The final power back-up for this radio is to play or recharge is using your own USB cable connected to your computer or laptop. A USB port is built-in the side of your radio. Just plug into your computer or laptop to recharge or play the radio!
At the heart our ULTRA Solar Dynamo Survival Radio, there is an internal dynamo hand crank generator that recharges the internal replaceable Ni-MH battery pack and powers the radio, flashlight and reading lamp. Also, with a simple flip of a switch, the USB jack can connect to recharge many standard USB enabled gadgets like your iPod, MP3 players and Blackberry models (with your USB cable) and some cellphones (when used with dynamo cranking power). It comes with 6 cellphone tips that can charge some phone models by the crank generator.*
